Library Policies

The Internet is currently an unregulated medium. Unlike other library resources, it is not organized, cataloged, or indexed. The information available on the Internet includes much that is personally, professionally, and culturally enriching. It also provides access to material that may be offensive or disturbing to some individuals, as well as access to information that may be factually incorrect and /or illegal.

The Loxley Public Library does not monitor and has no control over the information available through the Internet, and specifically disclaims any warranty as to the information’s accuracy, authoritativeness, timeliness, usefulness or fitness for a particular purpose. The Loxley Public Library endorses the Library Bill of Rights, including the new interpretation on electronic access, as adopted by the American Library Association, and supports the democratic principle of every citizen’s right to free access to information.

Parents concerned about their children’s use of electronic resources are ultimately responsible for setting standards and establishing guidelines for their children. The Loxley Public Library affirms the responsibility of parents to determine the appropriateness of Internet-accessed resources, and all other library materials, for their children.

Internet use will be managed in a manner consistent with other library service policies. Misuse of the computer or Internet access may result in the loss of computer privileges. Reference staff can provide limited assistance for basic start up procedures. Books and periodical articles may be available in the Library’s collection to answer specific Internet-related questions.

Use of the Internet
The Loxley Public Library reserves the right to limit the use of its electronic resources by the public. Such limitations may include, but are not limited to:

•  Restricting time on computers and limiting the applications or functions used on the computers (e.g. email, Usenet groups, and chat groups are not available to patrons.)
•  Requiring that patrons use their own pre-formatted diskettes for downloading files (the Library is not responsible for any loss or damage to personal disks.)
•  Requiring that patrons use only Library-supplied software: patrons may not use personal software, or alter or attach equipment to the Library’s hardware.
•  Patrons are required to bring their own headphones to be able to use audio on the Library’s computers.
•  Charging a nominal fee for the use of certain consumable supplies such as paper.
•  Encouraging families and groups to share a single terminal.

The Loxley Public Library’s electronic resources may be used only for purposes which are legal and consistent with the Library’ mission. Unacceptable uses include, but are not limited to:

•  Harassment of other library or computer users or staff; or unauthorized access to files, data or passwords of others.
•  Libeling or slandering others.
•  Disruption or unauthorized monitoring of electronic communications.
•  Unauthorized copying of copyright-protected material.
•  Violations, or attempts to violate, computer system security and /or software license agreements.
•  Intentional exposure to other individuals of material or images which they (or their parents) may find personally unsuitable.
•  Damaging or attempting to alter computer equipment.
•  Incurring any cost to the Loxley Public Library.
